The Glockenbachviertel is one of Munich’s most popular nightlife districts, where bars and clubs share the streets with snack bars and doner kebab shops. Here is a guide for the best spots for a midnight snack, from late evening until the early morning hours.
At night, the city takes on a more interesting character. A shift change takes place: Those who lead a regular life head home and what's left are the adventurers and bon vivants, who roam the Glockenbachviertel in search of entertainment, beer and hot food until the early hours of the morning. But of course, the late-night snack has to match the mood. A guide – from early to late.
The Atmosphere: The good old days
“Urban jungle, constant change, always something new: All well and good, but some things are best left as they are.”
If you are hungry and want to take inspiration from the past and tradition, Fraunhofer is the place to go. For over 250 years, beer has been tapped and roast pork served here. Don’t let the dark wood panelling fool you – the pub‘s stage regularly hosts subversive and progressive programmes. It is the perfect place to sit and drink until one o'clock in the morning until your beer coaster looks like a relief by Albrecht Dürer.
Fraunhoferstraße 9
Kitchen open until 10 pm
The Atmosphere: After Work
“A beer-soaked pub where guests clink glasses to life and are already on their fourth “Halben” (half a litre)? Absolutely not! I've just put the finishing touches to my presentation for tomorrow morning and the last thing I need now is a pub where I feel like I've missed out on everything.”
Sounds like someone needs a hug. You can get that culinary hug at Makassar on Geyerstrasse. The restaurant is open until 1 am and serves fine French classics, like beef tartare, lamb chops and perfectly roasted duck breasts. The ideal spot to reward yourself for your hard work that will hopefully pay off well. Work hard, play hard!
Geyerstraße 52
Kitchen open until 10.30 pm
The Atmosphere: Good is better than perfect
“Social media overload, the pension gap or figuring out how to approach the latest trend drink (Negroni Sbagliato): The world can be quite exhausting. Sometimes you just want less.”
At M.C. Mueller, you have choice without hassle. The place, which calls itself a “burger bar”, offers both, cocktails and burgers. In short: everything you need to simply have a good time. No change of location, no bar hopping, no FOMO. Instead, good drinks, feel-good food and a cosy chair to relax in until closing time, usually around 1 am.
Fraunhoferstraße 2
Kitchen open until 11 pm (Friday and Saturday), during the week until 10 pm
The Atmosphere: Originality is overrated
“Brunch in a breakfast café on Gärtnerplatz square, a bit of shopping in between and an Aperol Spritz in every bar. Then you suddenly realise: There's no more clichéd way to experience the Glockenbachviertel. Great! For the sake of principle, the only thing missing is the perfect place to round off the evening.”
In this situation, there is only one choice: Gute Nacht Wurst, which – surprisingly! – offers sausage. Nowadays, of course, also vegetarian and vegan options, served with: fries. The name keeps what it promises and even a little more: of course, they also serve Aperol Spritz – even at three o’clock in the morning.
Klenzestraße 32
Kitchen open until 3 am
The Atmosphere: We haven't talked about that yet!
“You're sitting together comfortably, moving from one topic to the next – as is the case when you haven't seen each other for a while. And on the way to the subway, you suddenly realise that you forgot to mention that you have a new job!”
Then it’s time for a quick detour to Bergwolf. The currywurst and fries specialist is one of those places that earned the status of a neighbourhood institution. You also didn’t mention that you no longer eat meat? No problem, the sausage here is also available in a vegan version. Grab a seat at one of the large tables and chat until everything has finally been said. On weekends, you can stay until four in the morning, on Thursdays until two, otherwise until midnight.
Fraunhoferstraße 17
Kitchen open until 4 am (on weekends)
The Atmosphere: Who and where am I?
“Wasn’t I just sitting by the Isar River and resolved that I would just have one beer today? Then why have I lost control of my legs and why is my head spinning? I need a high-calorie lifebuoy!”
You can find it on Müllerstrasse at Bazi's Schlemmerkucherl: from crusty roast or duck with dumplings to Käsespätzle (cheese pasta), there's a hearty antidote for every level of intoxication. Everything is served in a convenient to-go box. And afterwards, all will be fine, promise. The culinary emergency service is open until 10 pm during the week and until 5 am at weekends.
Müllerstraße 43
Kitchen open until 5 am (on weekends)
The Atmosphere: Go on and on
“There are days (or nights) when you just want to let yourself drift. Grab-and-go food instead of a fancy meal, wandering around instead of settling down, a standing bar instead of a regulars' table."
Is the Reichenbachkiosk the beacon at the end of Fraunhoferstrasse that magically attracts all night owls, or rather an oasis on Isar River where weary party animals can recharge their batteries for their way home? Either way, it's the place that satisfies all your early-morning cravings – from any imaginable type of beer and cigarettes to snacks, croissants and a classic leberkas (meatloaf) roll. And the best thing about it: The kiosk only takes a one-hour break between 5 to 6 am.
Fraunhoferstraße 46
Snacks available until 5 am
The Atmosphere: We are all the same with a kebab
“A drink with flambéed pineapple here, a smoked whiskey sour there – the Glockenbachviertel has its share of bars with more alchemists than bartenders working behind the counter. And while that's nice every now and then, sometimes you just crave for something down-to-earth.”
What could be more down-to-earth than a doner kebab? At Sila’s, you can get one until 5:30 am. While you are deciding between the spicy or non-spicy options, your gaze might land on the tripe soup. Maybe those last three drinks have awakened the adventurous foodie in you? It’s worth a try!
Sendlinger-Tor-Platz 8
Kitchen open until 5.30 am
The Atmosphere: What's going on here?
“The nun sitting in front of Loretta Bar, sipping coffee in the middle of the night certainly has an interesting story to tell. Or the huge guy walking his pug with his shirt off. A big part of the fun when going-out is watching people.“
For many night owls, the adventure in Glockenbachviertel begins at Alpen Imbiss – and for just as many, it ends there. Situated just around the corner from Sendlinger Tor subway station, it serves as an unofficial gateway to the neighbourhood. Things can get pretty curious here, especially in the early morning hours. And if there are no people to watch, you can enjoy the murals inside the Alpen Imbiss, blending alpine and oriental styles. Most people opt for doner kebab here, but they can also order mezze, pide and pizza – around the clock.
